Migrating away from Shopify can feel daunting. Store owners worry about losing customer data, breaking URLs, and experiencing downtime. However, with a structured approach, migrating to a platform like Comez can be seamless and secure.
Phase 1: Pre-Migration Planning
Do not cancel your Shopify subscription yet. Your store must remain live while you build the new one.
- Audit your data: Identify how many products, variants, collections, and customers you have.
- App Review: List the third-party apps you currently use (e.g., reviews, loyalty, shipping). Determine how these functions will be handled on the new platform. (With Comez, many are native).
- SEO Mapping: Use Google Analytics or Search Console to identify your top-performing pages. Export a list of all your current URLs.
Phase 2: Data Export from Shopify
Shopify allows you to export most of your critical data via CSV files.
- Export Products: Go to Products > Export. Ensure you select 'All products' and export as a CSV for Excel, Numbers, or other spreadsheet programs.
- Export Customers: Go to Customers > Export.
- Export Orders: Go to Orders > Export. (Note: Only historical reference data can usually be migrated; live subscriptions/recurring payments are tied to the gateway).
Phase 3: Setting Up the New Platform (Comez)
Now you configure your new environment while the Shopify store continues to process live orders.
- Import Data: Upload the cleaned CSV files into your new Comez store. Verify that variants, pricing, and inventory levels are accurate.
- Configure Settings: Set up your taxes, shipping zones, and native Shiprocket integration.
- Connect Gateways: Input your API keys for Razorpay, PhonePe, or other payment processors.
- Design Storefront: Recreate or improve your store's design using the new platform's builder.
Phase 4: SEO Preservation (301 Redirects)
This is the most critical step to prevent losing your Google rankings. Shopify forces a specific URL structure (e.g., '/products/item-name'). Your new platform might use a different structure.
You must create a 301 redirect map. For every old URL, specify the corresponding new URL. Upload this map to your new platform so anyone clicking an old link is instantly routed to the correct new page.
Phase 5: Testing and Launch
Before throwing the switch, perform a dry run.
- Place a test order.
- Verify shipping calculations are correct.
- Test contact forms and email notifications.
The Switch: Once you are satisfied, log in to your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.) and change your DNS A-records to point to your new Comez servers. DNS propagation can take a few hours, but your site will not experience downtime—visitors will simply start seeing the new store as the records update globally.
